Jerom Adams was born and raised in Schenectady, a city he has called home for over 45 years. As a young boy, he was drawn into training in Shotokan Karate at the age of four at his father’s karate school. A spark ignited that grew into a deeper interest and passion for the martial arts. However, like most young men, he was also drawn to the competitive side of the training, and it wasn’t long before he found himself embracing a more full contact approach. He competed in many full and semi-full contact tournaments held in the capital district earning trophies and recognition as a capable fighter.
In 1978, he earned his black belt in Shotokan karate, and it was at this point that he began to train in Shorin-Ryu and Isshin-Ryu karate. He was particularly drawn to the mental and spiritual aspects of the training.
In 1983-84 he studied Hung-Gar Kung-Fu with Sifu Valenzuela. He found this intensified level of technique and training was a great compliment to the linear Japanese styles he trained in and opened up a new vocabulary of movement. Tiger and Crane animal systems were a welcome departure from tradition karate katas (forms).
In 1990 he furthered his education in the pugilist arts with boxing. Training at Willy Pep’s gym in Schenectady for the next ten years complimented his progressive search in the classical fighting arts.
Jerom continues to train and teach kickboxing and boxing in the Capital district along with group fitness classes. As a certified group fitness instructor he taught classes at Gold’s gym and became a Fitness coach.
